Did they not get the memo from almost 70 plus years ago? Black face is not cool. Its not edgy, smart, fashion forward or post-racial. This is a spread from the October issue.
Mind you, the whole black face movement started as early as the 15th century. White actors used black make up to portray stereotypical assertions about the African American race. They sought out to make them look buffoonish, lazy, cowardly, and illiterate. Such stereotypes as eat watermelon, and dancing around foolishly. Then practice, which is called mistelsy, was used to promote and cement racist attitudes & feelings towards the black community at that time. Even though Sara Stone (the model that was used in this shoot) left out the white outline around her mouth or bright red lipstick, the pictures still are out of control.
I really don't know what the hell French Vogue was thinking, but there's definitely going to be a HUGE backlash from this. Being bold & edgy is okay and expected, but this is just unacceptable. I expected a lot more from one of the worlds largest fashion magazines. They didn't even have any decency to use any actually African American models!!! Now that's just rude and tacky.
